AfCFTA Trader Trust Passport

A cryptographically-bound trader identity for cross-border commerce under the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol — issued to verified businesses, recognised by customs authorities and freight forwarders, anchored to the same DID method as a personal civic identity.

Structural design

Issuance
Issued to verified businesses (sole traders, cooperatives, registered companies) after the same biometric continuity + WebAuthn passkey flow that anchors a personal civic identity. The trader DID resolves on civicanchor.id.
Schema
Extends BusinessAnchorVC with trader-specific fields — customs code, country-of-origin attestations, business-registration hash, and AfCFTA Rules-of-Origin self-certifications. Every claim is verifiable against an issuer DID.
Verification
Customs authorities and freight forwarders verify a passport with a single signed ping (webhook contract, mTLS) — same network primitive as personal-identity verification, scoped to trader-class checks.
Standardisation
Reference schema authored by the independently-governed Civic Anchor Foundation, drafted for donation to the AfCFTA Secretariat as the open Digital Trade Identity Standard. Commercial implementation by CivicAnchor Group.

Timeline

  1. 2026

    Reference schema in draft

Foundation publishes the v0 schema for review; Smart Africa technical working group consultations; design-partner cohort opens.

  2. 2027

    Pilot corridor

First operational pilot expected on a single SADC corridor (likely BW or NA, regulator-stable Anglophone entry) — pending design-partner uptake.

  3. 2028+

    AfCFTA-DTP alignment

AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol ratification window. Foundation submits the schema to the AfCFTA Secretariat as the reference standard.

The dates above are planning windows, not commitments. Pilot timing depends on design-partner uptake, regulator engagement, and AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol ratification — none of which Civic Anchor controls unilaterally.

Pre-launch design partners

We are taking inbound from customs authorities, freight forwarders, trade-finance banks (Afreximbank, AfDB, TDB), reinsurers, and AfCFTA Secretariat staff who want to shape the schema before it goes to the Foundation.
